Encino is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley. It’s name can be traced back to the 1760s, when Spanish explorers began traveling inland into California. Fray Juan Crespi, a Franciscan missionary travelling with an expedition, named the valley “El Valle de Santa Catalina de Bononia de Los Encinos” (The Valley of St. Catherine of Bononia of the Oaks). Eventually the name was shortened to Encino, as it remains today. A central community of the Valley, Encino includes the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area, which offers golf courses, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, and more.
